SUGGESTED STEPS TO STUDENT SUCCESS: § Believe in yourself! § Seek the help of any staff member, if you find yourself having problems. We can’t help if we don’t know. § Be prepared with all necessary materials. § Look for someone you can help in school. We are part of a team that is working for success. § Get involved! At Haskell we have many recognition and reward programs and these make school a great experience. “THE BILL OF STUDENT RIGHTS”EVERY PERSON has the right to be treated as an exceptional human being. By being a student at Haskell Middle School you can expect these things: a. The right to an education. (Teachers should be free to teach and students free to learn without being interrupted by disruptive students.) b. The right to be safe in school and to have personal and school property respected. c. Freedom from physical abuse and/or mental abuse such as name calling, intimidation, harassment, or vulgar language. Swearing and use of inappropriate language are not acceptable. Discipline will be in compliance with school and district policy. d. Freedom from being segregated or mocked because of race, sex, religion, physical strength, friendship groups, age, culture, handicap, clothing, etc. e. The right to be respected and the right to privacy and freedom. f. The right to develop one’s own personality (as long as it does not interfere with the rights of others) without disrespectful criticism or pressure from peers or cliques. HIGH EXPECTATIONS = HIGH STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTDuring this time of your life, EDUCATION is your career. Coming to this school is your job and your basic job expectations are as follows: Bring required supplies to each class daily. Know which classes require SPECIAL MATERIALS. Be responsible for taking those materials to each class daily. Take your STUDENT PLANNER to each class daily. Write down all assignments daily. TEXTBOOKS will be available in each of your classes. There is no need to carry these to and from class as you will have two sets. Using and treating your textbooks appropriately is important for your classwork. Be prepared and complete all HOMEWORK assignments. Write down all assignments daily in your planner. Use the 4-Step Plan: 1. Write assignments in agenda 2. Share assignments with parents 3. Do the assignments everyday 4. Turn-in assignments on time for credit. Be responsible for LEARNING at school. Learning is your first responsibility. It is great to have friends but you should not socialize during class time. Socializing interferes with instruction, learning and the academic atmosphere of the classroom. Put forth your best EFFORT at all times. Use this Student Planner correctly and seek help when needed.

*Sustained Silent Reading Emergency Information Parents are requested to please notify the office of address and phone numbers and alternative phone numbers that can be used in emergency situations. Contacting parents is essential. It is the parent’s responsibility to notify the school office of any changes in home address or work/home phone numbers. Students should carry their Haskell Student ID card with them at all times. Emergency Evacuations In the event of an emergency or emergency drill, students will evacuate the buildings under the direction of their current teacher, then line up for roll call and further instructions. Fire, earthquake, and crisis drills are set-up to help prevent injuries in the case of emergency. Attendance Good school attendance is important to a student’s success at the middle school. Poor attendance usually results in poor achievement. The majority of students who maintain regular attendance and are rarely absent, throughout a given school year, often prove to be the students who are academically successful. Although this isn’t the only factor involved in achieving good grades we find that…when you miss school, you miss out! Student Absences/Re-Admit Slip 1. A parent should call the Haskell Middle School Attendance Office at 860-6529 by 9:00 A.M. Otherwise the school must contact the home or parent’s workplace to confirm the absence. 2. When returning to school from an absence, students must bring a note that is signed by their parent to the Attendance Office. The note must contain the date(s) of absence, student’s full name, and the specific reason for the absence. This information is necessary for students to receive a Re-Admit Slip. 3. The Attendance Office opens at 7:30 A.M. to issue a Re-Admit Slip to those students who were absent. Following an absence, students must receive a Re-Admit Slip to return to classes. Students lacking a Re-Admit Slip following an absence will be returned to the office. The Re-Admit Slip is to be signed by all teachers whose class periods were missed. 4. Parents may not keep students home to baby-sit, run errands, or for any non-emergency family business. Such absences are unexcused. 5. Students with six (6) days of absences may be referred to the Student Attendance Review Board (SARB). 6. Excused Absences: Generally an excused absence is one where the parent/guardian communicates with the school about the absence and the absence is for illness, family emergency, medical appointment or official school business. In addition, if a student is out less than a full day, the parent must sign the student in/out at the office. Homework Assignments missed during a student’s excused absence should be made-up within the same number of days as the length of the absence. Teachers are not required to accept work missed during an unexcused absence. Students absent for 1 – 2 days are encouraged to receive homework assignments from a classmate or, if necessary, wait until returning to school to receive the assignments. Students absent for 3 days may call the Attendance Office and request the assignments. One full school day is needed to acquire all assignments from the teachers. As with all other school assignments, it is the student’s responsibility to turn in all completed make-up work. 8. Leaving Campus: Once on campus, students can not leave. If there is a reason to leave campus during school hours, a student must: Bring a note signed by a parent/guardian to the Attendance Office before the start of classes. Be signed out in the office, by a parent/guardian or by an adult listed on the Emergency Information Card on file in the office, before leaving campus. For your child’s safety, we ask that a picture I.D. be shown. Upon return to the school, if it is the same day, the student must check-in at the Attendance Office to receive a Re-Admit Slip to be signed the next day by all teachers whose class periods were missed. 9. Supervision: Haskell Middle School provides supervision for students on campus during regular school hours and during any authorized, scheduled after-school activities until the event is over. Students must leave campus immediately after school unless they are authorized to stay until their after-school activity is over. Parents are strongly encouraged to pick up students who are not walking home immediately after school or after the student’s authorized event is over. Tardy Policy Promptness to class is very important. Students are to be in their seats and ready to work when the bell sounds. Students who are tardy interrupt not only their own educational program, but that of others as well. Tardy Policy rules are as follows: 1. Tardy records are kept on a quarterly basis. 2. Tardies are dealt with in the following manner. 1st Tardy – Warning in class by teacher to student. 2nd Tardy – Contact parent. 3rd Tardy – “N” in citizenship for the quarter. 4th Tardy – Referral to office, one hour after school detention, and “U” in class citizenship for the quarter. 5th Tardy – Referral to office, (2) one hour after school detentions, loss of after school activities. 6th Tardy – Enrollment in the Haskell Middle School Three-Tiered Student Behavioral Contract or, if already on the contract, moved to next level. 3. Any student late to Homeroom should go to his/her Homeroom class. The teacher will record the tardy. If the roll sheet for Homeroom has been sent to the office, the Homeroom teacher will send the student to the office for the tardy to be recorded. 4. Students tardy during 1st period or thereafter must report to the office to sign-in on the Daily Tardy Sheet, be issued a tardy slip, and report to class. 5. Excused tardies are granted ONLY for the following reasons: § Personal Illness – with a note from the parent attesting to the illness. § Dentist or Doctor’s appointment – If you have been to an early morning medical/dental appointment, we need to have some form of paperwork verifying that you were there. If you missed one or more periods you must get a Re-Admit Slip for the classes missed. 6. Students with a chronic record of tardies will be referred to the ABCUSD Student Attendance Review Board for further assistance. Checking out of Haskell If a student moves or transfers to another school during the school year, he/she must report to the Attendance Office with a letter to that effect, or a parent must contact the school secretary. Information and items needed include: 1. New home location and new school. 2. Student needs to return all textbooks and library books. 3. Student is to take a “check-out” sheet to each classroom to be signed by each of the student’s teachers before the check-out is complete. Time Management Students will be held accountable for using their classroom instructional time wisely and efficiently. Student Agendas are purchased for each student and those who faithfully use this agenda are often organized and successful. All students at Haskell Middle School are required to bring the necessary materials to each class so that they may participate in the educational process. Students coming to class unprepared create instructional disruptions that negatively affect others and valuable time is taken away from learning. Haskell’s Top Three Priorities 1. Academic Achievement 2. Peaceful Campus 3. Respect for Staff and Fellow Students Haskell Middle School “School Rules” 1. No “Gum” on campus. 2. No food or drink including water outside the quad area. 3. Be on time to your class, before the tardy bell rings. 4. Bring all necessary materials to class daily. 5. Do not touch other people’s property without permission. 6. Keep your hands to yourself. 7. Do not leave class without a pass. 8. Do not disrupt the learning of others. 9. Please walk – there is no running allowed on campus. 10. Follow all classroom rules and policies. Policy for Sun Protective Clothing, including Hats
ABC Unified School District and Haskell Middle School realize the importance of young people being protected from the sun, by use of sun block or protective clothing for the skin and a hat on the head. In response to the California law, SB 310, which became Ed. Code 35183.5 effective January 1, 2002, and the No Hat Policy of Haskell Middle School, the following is the policy and guidelines. Haskell Middle School is and will remain a No Hat School. This means that there shall be nothing on any student’s head including, but not limited to, baseball caps, stocking caps, wave caps, hoods, and bandanas. Students, who wish to use some type of clothing as protection from the sun on their skin and head, may do so, by submitting and placing on file, in their student cum folder, a written request by parent/guardian or a doctor’s prescription AND by following these guidelines. 1. Clothing shall be of lightweight material and light colored, to be used as a “second layer” over regular clothes of school uniform (P.E. clothes). Such sun protective clothes shall not be worn as a student’s primary dress, nor shall such clothing allow any undergarments to be shown. 2. Hats must be made out of straw, with a brim of not less than three (3) inches and not more than five (5) inches, completely around the hat. 3. Hats shall have no other distinguishing marks, including hand written or sewn markings, inside or out, nor any type of hat band around the crown of the hat. 4. The protective clothing and hats shall be worn during the student’s Physical Education class, during outdoor activities and only when the items will not interfere with the days planned activity or exercise. 5. On days when the UV (ultraviolet) sun index is above 6, students may wear these items during snack and lunch also. 6. No hat shall ever be worn in a classroom. 7. The administration of Haskell Middle School reserves the right to interpret this policy on a case-by-case basis and revise as necessary. Dress Code School is the student’s place of business and he/she is expected to dress accordingly. The ABC Unified School District policy states that, “students should be neat and clean and their attire should not present a potential safety hazard, or be detrimental or disruptive to the educational process for themselves or their classmates.” In conjunction with this policy, Haskell Middle School adopts the following standards concerning dress and appearance of our students and these rules will be strictly enforced. Specific clothing NOT ALLOWED includes (but not limited to) the following: NO hats or headgear of any kind (including bandannas, scarves, and hoods unless medically or religiously required and approved by the school). NO clothing or jewelry (or markings on clothing or body) depicting or suggesting inappropriate gestures, pictures, words, illegal activity, or deemed provocative. NO clothing promoting the use of spray cans, marking pens, or other graffiti-related activity. NO clothing, jewelry, or accessories, which are deemed threatening to the student or others. This includes any kind of studded spiked bracelets/studded spiked belts, necklaces, or chains of any type. NO clothing (i.e., gloves, bandanas, shoestrings, wristbands or initialed belt buckles) relating to gang activity. Anything that may provoke others to act violently or be intimidated by fear of violence. NO gang script or writing on notebooks, paper, or other school materials including backpacks. NO body markings or piercing that are deemed a distraction. NO EXCESSIVELY BAGGY CLOTHING! (This includes jackets, parkas, and overcoats). Not only does excessively oversized clothing have the possible connotation of “gang” involvement, it also affords potential hiding places for prohibited items and becomes a safety hazard.
Violations of the Haskell Middle School Dress Code Policy will result in disciplinary action. Including but not limited to: a warning, an office referral, parent notification, assigned detention or other consequences for repeat offenses. Inappropriate clothing will be confiscated and the student will be asked to change into his/her P.E. uniform for the remainder of the school day. Clothing will be returned only to the parent of the student. Repeat violations will result in the placement of the student on the Haskell Middle School Three-Tiered Behavioral Contract, with consequences as outlined in the contract.
Office Phone Use The office phones are for business purposes only. STUDENT USE OF OFFICE PHONES WILL NOT BE ALLOWED DURING CLASS HOURS. PHONE CALLS WILL BE ALLOWED IN EMERGENCY SITUATIONS ONLY AT THE DETERMINATION OF THE ADMINISTRATION AND SCHOOL SECRETARIES. Please make sure students have all necessary materials and transportation arrangements have been made before arriving to school. Telephone Messages
It is requested that telephone messages to the office for students be limited to emergency messages and phone calls only. Campus Decorum
Students will demonstrate respectful behavior toward each other, teachers, and staff at all times. Students are to remain quiet during classroom instruction and speak respectfully in an appropriate manner and tone to all adults. Any display of defiance or disrespect toward school personnel in the performance of their duties will not be tolerated. Disruption of instruction is not tolerated at Haskell Middle School. Students who interrupt the flow of instruction and prevent themselves and others from learning will be subject to disciplinary consequences as outlined in the “Violations and Consequences” section of this agenda. Community Responsibility
We are privileged to live, work, and be educated in a multiculturally rich and ethnically diverse community. It is the responsibility of all of us to conduct ourselves and interact with each other in a respectful, understanding, and tolerant manner. Racial and ethnic slurs, comments, put-downs, stereotypes and demeaning comments will not be permitted. Student Safe School Responsibilities In recent years many tragedies have occurred on school campuses in California and nationwide. Having a safe place to go to school is everyone’s responsibility. Haskell students are required to report any unsafe situation or item that they may see or hear on campus. If you hear or see something that might be of danger to yourself or others, tell an adult. Don’t Joke Around. Comments made will be taken seriously. All information reported is kept confidential. Dangerous Articles/Items On Campus Weapons of any kind are strictly prohibited on any school campus per Ed. Code and Penal Code. Weapons include, but are not limited to, guns (including toys, water pistols, paintball guns, or look-a-likes), knives (of any size), “Exacto” knives, razor blades, martial arts tools, chains (outside of bicycle use), laser pointer lights, or objects and jewelry that could be considered a weapon. Other types of dangerous articles are “shocker” devices, fireworks and explosives, “poppers”, homemade or manufactured bombs, lighters and lighter fluid, matches, aerosol cans, and “stink-bombs”. Students in possession of, distributing, or manufacturing any of the aforementioned items are subject to disciplinary action up to and including suspension and expulsion from school (Student Evaluation Committee). Additional consequences for serious infractions may require law enforcement intervention and expulsion from ABCUSD. Illegal and Prohibited Substances Tobacco products, alcohol (of any kind), narcotics, prescription drugs and inhalants are strictly prohibited. Students found in possession of, distributing, manufacturing, or under the influence of these substances will be immediately referred to the office for disciplinary consequences. Consequences may include suspension from school, notification of local law enforcement, and referral to the ABCUSD Student Evaluation Committee. Other prohibited items Include correction fluid, toxic or permanent markers, and aerosol cans (of any size). These articles are considered inhalants, and markers might be used for graffiti. A student may not be in possession of pressurized cans of air a, t school. Fighting Fighting of any sort is forbidden at Haskell Middle School. This applies to any physical combat on school grounds, at anytime including on the way to school or from school, or at a school sponsored event. Physical contact includes “play fighting”, “slapping”, or “birthday hits”. Students involved in fighting are subject to the following consequences. 1st Violation: Suspension from school and referral to the ABCUSD S.T.E.P. Anger Management Program for 3 days. 2nd Violation: Five days of suspension from school and referral to the ABCUSD Student Evaluation Committee for transfer to an alternative school site. Note: On severe fighting infractions, multiple days of suspension and referral to the ABCUSD SEC may be applied for the initial violation. Prohibited Items on Campus All toys, electronic games, devices, or anything considered a “plaything” is to be left at home unless permission is granted by school personnel. If these items are brought to school without permission, they will be confiscated until the end of the school year, or until a parent conference can be held. Confiscated items will not be returned to anyone but the parent of the student from whom it was taken. Items which are prohibited include, but are not limited to: cameras, flat irons, radios, tape/CD players, iPods, marking pens, pagers, cell phones, hand-held computers, laptops, toys of any kind, trading cards, and inappropriate magazines or videos. Be smart and leave these items at home. Cell Phones/Personal Property/Money Cell phones may not be used or visible on campus at any time; including after school activities. Any student whose cell phone disrupts a classroom or is visible during school hours will have his or her cell phone confiscated. Confiscated phones will be returned only to the student’s parent/guardian. ABCUSD and Haskell Middle School are not insured for the loss or damage of cell phones or other electronic devices that are brought to school by students. Therefore, school personnel will not be responsible for lost or stolen items and will not engage in the investigation to recover said items. Students are welcome to use the office phones to call parents in case of emergency. It is very important that students use good judgment and are careful of their personal belongings needed at school. Valuables and large sums of money should not be brought to school. Bicycle/Skateboard Policy Bicycles – Padlocks are a necessity to discourage possible theft. The school cannot take responsibility for bicycles. All students riding bicycles to and from school will need to sign a “Bicycle Contract”. Safety rules must be followed or students will lose the privilege of riding their bicycle to school. California State Law mandated that all students are to wear a bicycle helmet as of January, 1995. Not wearing a helmet will take away the privilege of riding a bicycle to school. Bicycles – must be walked to and from the parking lot or sidewalk. Bicycles are not allowed in the parking lot, on the campus or on the athletic field at any time. Skateboards – May be ridden to school. Students must have a locking device to secure the board to the bike rack. Helmets must be worn and a skateboard rider contract must be on file with the office. Inappropriate Behavior Inappropriate language, gestures, or actions by students, will not be tolerated. This type of behavior includes, but is not limited to: Gum: Gum chewing is not allowed on campus at Haskell. Even with this rule, careless disposal of gum in drinking fountains, on furniture, and on floors and walkways is a serious problem. Classroom referrals and detention will be issued for infractions. Food: Not allowed out of the designated eating area or in the classrooms. Throwing of food is not allowed. Spitting: Spitting represents an unhealthy and socially unacceptable behavior that is not permitted in school. Disrespect: To insult, call derogatory names, dishonor or in any other manner abuse verbally or in writing any member of the staff or student body. Disorderly Conduct: Engaging in violent, abusive, indecent, profane, boisterous, unreasonably loud, or other conduct which tends to cause or provoke a disturbance. Vandalism: Causing damage to school or private property. False Reports: The act of falsely reporting incidents or making false accusations or giving false information to school personnel which could affect the welfare of others. Inappropriate Display of Affection: Hugging, kissing, embracing etc. Littering: Throwing or leaving waste, debris, or other litter on school property. Throwing of Objects: Anywhere on campus is a potentially dangerous practice and is not tolerated. Horseplay: Roughhousing and aggressive play is not allowed. Ethics
Haskell Middle School maintains a standard of ethics to which all students are held accountable. Cheating and plagiarism (the misrepresentation of some one else’s work as your own), are not acceptable. All tests, quizzes, reports, assignments, homework, and all student generated work are subject to this policy. Violations include (but are not limited to) the following:
Any of the following consequences may be administered for students found to be in violation of the Haskell Middle School Ethics Policy. 1st Offense: 1. “Zero” on assignment, test, etc. 2. Parent Notification. 3. Referral placed in student’s file. 4. One to three days of detention. 5. An “N” in citizenship for the quarter in which the violation occurs. 2nd Offense: (Either in the same class as the first offense or in a different class.) 1. Same as 1, 2, 3 and 4 as stated in the 1st offense. 2. “U” in Citizenship for the quarter in which the violation occurs. 3. Removal from activities. 4. Removal from offices or leadership. 5. Placement on Tier 1 of the Haskell Middle School Three – Tiered Contract. 6. Parent Conference. 3rd Offense: (Either in the same class as the first offense, or in a different class.) 1. Student placed on Tier II of the Haskell Middle School Three – Tiered Contract. 2. Consequences assigned as stated in Tier II of the Haskell Middle School Three-Tiered Contract. Forgery Forgery of a parent/guardian or teacher signature by a student is prohibited. Students who forge signatures on school documents, attendance notes, tests or homework assignments, or contracts are subject to disciplinary action and parent notification. Continued infractions may result in suspension from school. Bullying Bullying is a form of harassment and will not be tolerated at Haskell Middle School. Bullying is defined as when a student is repeatedly exposed to negative actions on the part of one or more other students. Bullying includes direct behaviors such as teasing, taunting, threatening, hitting, and stealing. Derogatory name calling or taunts related to race or ethnicity, religion, disability, gender, or sexual orientation is a form of bullying and harassment. The entire Haskell Community is committed to stop bullies and bullying on campus. Students and staff can do their part by reporting incidences of bullying. Parents are encouraged to contact the office if they hear or suspect that bullying is taking place. Sexual Harassment Sexual harassment of students by other students, or by school personnel, will not be tolerated by the ABC Unified School District Board of Education (Policy 51.47.7). Our district considers such harassment to be a major offense, which can result in disciplinary action. What Is Sexual Harassment? Any unwelcome advances, requests, demands, visual rendering, verbal or written comments of a sexual nature constitutes sexual harassment. The conduct has the purpose, or effect, of interfering with a student’s academic performance or creating an intimidating hostile, or offensive educational environment. Other examples of sexual harassment are: § Unwelcome leering, flirting, or propositioning/ impeding or blocking of normal movements. § Sexual slurs, threats, verbal abuse, derogatory comments, or degrading comments. § Sexual jokes, stories, drawings, pictures, or gestures. Spreading sexual rumors. § Graphic comments about an individual’s body/touching in an unwelcome or offensive nature. § Displaying sexually suggestive objects or materials. § Sexual comments, innuendoes, or slurs, verbally or in writing, regarding a person’s sexual orientation. What If I Experience Sexual Harassment? Report the incident to your teacher, SIA, office personnel, or administration. In no case will the reporting student be requested to resolve the complaint directly with the offending person. Consequences and Disciplinary Measures Parents will always be notified of consequences administered for serious or recurring inappropriate student behavior. Measures used to discourage inappropriate behavior at Haskell Middle School include the following: Documentation Disruption of instruction documentation may be entered on a student when his/her behavior is interrupting the instructional process, but not to the point where the behavior would warrant an office referral. This procedure allows for a short intervention by the teacher without any additional discussion or action that would further interrupt instruction. This exists as an intermediate step to both inform the student of the seriousness of his/her behavior, and to raise the level of concern about school expectations of appropriate classroom behavior. Some examples of disruptive behavior that would initially be handled with this procedure are:
Typically, a student will be informed that the behavior is being documented as a “disruption.” This will be sent to the office and entered into the student’s discipline file. Based on periodic printouts, parents will be informed by the office of excessive violations. After School Detention After school detention is assigned by the office administration, or S.I.A., for infractions of school rules and policies, resulting in a referral to the office. After school detention is held on Thursdays and Fridays from 2:15 – 3:15 P.M and on early dismissal Thursdays from 1:00 – 2:00 P.M. Continued violations of the Haskell Middle School Student Behavior Code as well as multiple tardies are the reasons most students are assigned detention. Separate after school detentions may be assigned by an individual teacher (to be served in that teacher’s class) provided parents are notified prior to the assigned day by the teacher. Usually a written detention notice is sent home with the student prior to the day assigned. Detention Rules 1. Students must be seated in the room at the assigned time to receive credit for attendance. 2. Silent Detention – students are given an assignment to be completed by the end of the detention hour without any conversation with others. 3. “No Show” – 1st No Show - Detention missed plus penalty detention. 2nd No Show – Detention missed plus penalty and office referral. 3rd No Show – Parent Conference and enrollment on the Student Contract. 4. Late Arrivals to detention are considered as “No Show”. 5. Disruption of Detention – 1st – Student dismissal and assigned detentions are doubled. 2nd – Office referral. 3rd – Enrollment in the Student Contract. 6. Excessive Detentions – will result in an office referral to the administration. Excessive is defined as six assigned detentions per semester. Students with six or more detentions will be enrolled in the H.M.S. Three-Tiered Student Contract. Note: Repeated failure to serve after school detention is considered as “DEFIANCE” (for whatever reason) and may result in enrollment on the H.M.S. Three-Tiered Behavior Contract and/or suspension from school. Office Disciplinary Referral An office referral is issued to a student who has demonstrated unacceptable behavior or violated school rules. The referral is used to communicate with parents and inform them of the incident and any consequence earned. Referrals are mailed home for parental acknowledgement and signature. H.M.S. Three – Tiered Contract Students who have numerous referrals will be considered for placement on the H.M.S. Three – Tiered Student Behavior Contract. Students with a major offense will immediately be placed on the contract as part of H.M.S. guidance procedure following the initial offense. Offenses such as theft, robbery, sexual harassment, extortion, tobacco, vandalism, possession of dangerous objects, overt defiance, causing injury to others, and fighting are some of the examples of major offenses that would result in the immediate placement of a student on the behavioral contract. Consequences within each tier may include the following. § Tier I – Detentions, loss of school activity privileges, parent conferences, and suspension. § Tier II – All the above, plus site – based Student Evaluation Committee hearing. § Tier III – All the above, plus a five (5) day suspension and ABC Student Evaluation Committee hearing, and possible removal from Haskell Middle School. It is understood that ANY severe infraction committed while on any tier of the contract may result in Tier III consequences and subsequent placement in that tier. In all cases, parents will be contacted and asked to be involved in the contract process. Student Evaluation Committee (SEC) The Student Evaluation Committee of the ABC Unified School District hears cases that have resulted in multiple days of suspension or deemed to be of a very serious nature. The SEC meets at the ABC Unified School District offices, and is vested with the authority to enforce student transfers to other schools within the district or may recommend expulsion from all schools within the ABC Unified School District. Suspension Suspension from school is a serious matter. Suspensions are issued for a one to five (1-5) day duration. Grounds for suspension are outlined in the California State Education Code, section 48900, items “a” through “o.” Suspended students may not visit any school campus in the ABC Unified School District or participate in any school activity for the duration of the suspension. During a suspension it is at the discretion of the classroom teacher to allow make-up of any missed assignments, tests, or quizzes. Student Attendance Review Board (SARB) State law indicates that each school district must have a hearing board to review cases of serious attendance problems, truancies, and tardies. The Student Attendance Review Board of the ABC Unified School District is our avenue for such cases. SARB meetings are held at the ABC Unified School District Office in the Child Welfare and Attendance Office. The panel of members includes district officials, local counseling agencies, and a representative of the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office. School attendance is mandatory according to state law. Failure to attend school is in violation of this law and can result in criminal actions against the families of violators. Parents are notified by the school district three to five days prior to a scheduled SARB hearing. Search and Seizure School officials may search students and their property when there is reasonable suspicion of a violation of the rules of the school, district, or Education Code. Opening and inspecting school lockers is allowed without student permission to maintain a safe school environment. Involvement of Law Enforcement Authorities The ABC Unified School District takes very se, riously its responsibility to provide for the welfare, health and safety of students and staff. District administrators will involve law enforcement agencies, when necessary or as required by Education Code Section 48902, to maintain learning and working environments that are safe, , secure and free from the threat of physical or psychological harm. District administrators will notify law enforcement authorities of any student who brings, or is suspected of bringing, a firearm to school; possesses or threatens others with a weapon or dangerous instrument; threatens others with death or great bodily injury; commits a violent crime; unlawfully possesses, or is suspected of possessing, using, selling, or otherwise furnishing, or being under the influence of any controlled substance; or who commits theft, vandalism or destruction of property. Unless otherwise directed by law enforcement, parents or minors will be notified, as soon as practicable, that law enforcement authorities have been contacted. Student Responsibilities Textbooks In most classes, books are “checked out” to students to use throughout the year: THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE CARE AND SECURITY OF SCHOOL BOOKS RESTS WITH THE STUDENT. It is important that you remember the following conditions for textbook use: a. Never loan a book to another student. You are responsible for the book checked out to you. b. Keep your books covered at all times. You are responsible for any damage to your book during the school year. Notify the teacher immediately of any damage when the book is checked out. c. Lost or damaged books should be reported immediately to your teacher. The office will notify you if there are financial obligations due. Books should be returned at the end of the year in the same condition they were checked out. (taking into account general use over the year). Materials Students are required to bring binders, notebooks, writing paper, pens and pencils, to each class daily. Some classes require students to purchase “project supplies” (i.e. USB drivers, art materials, etc). Students should not carry markers or sharp pointed scissors. BOOK BAGS or backpacks are used by most students to carry their materials. Physical Education – Program and Clothing According to the Education Code, all students are to be enrolled in a middle school course of physical education. Students are required to “dress out” in a “uniform” of an approved shirt, shorts, shoes, and socks. These clothes are available through the P.E. teachers. Each student will be issued handouts at the beginning of the school year outlining policies of the P.E. program. Participation is one of the many elements in successfully completing the course of physical education, as well as participation in the mandated physical fitness tests and successful completion of the Personal Fitness Text. If you are ill and unable to participate in P.E. your parent or guardian must write a note. Parent notes are good for one day only, unless otherwise stated. Parent notes are good for three days maximum. If you need to be excused for more than three days, a doctor’s note is required. All medicals must dress out for class and remain on roll call numbers. A total of two (2) unexcused non-suits is considered excessive in any given quarter of the year. Office referrals are issued to students on a third, and subsequent non-suits. Excessive non-participation will negatively affect the overall academic grade of a student. It is the responsibility of the parent to notify the physical education department and the office of any prevailing or existing medical condition(s) that would in any way jeopardize the health, safety and/or well- being of their student while participating in the physical education program. ABCUSD Team Sports The ABCUSD offers a complete program of team sports for the middle school student. The team sports change quarterly and offers opportunities for boys and girls to participate. Behavior & Expectations: All school rules and policies (and consequences) are in place during the after school sports program (including game day competitions). This particularly applies to the dress code and student conduct. Parent Expectations: All parents are invited to attend the sports competitions either at their child’s home school or at a visiting campus. School age siblings and friends not enrolled at the host school are not to attend without supervision by an adult. Additionally, at the conclusion of practices and games, it is important that students are picked up ON TIME and not permitted to loiter around the school campuses. Students not leaving campus at the appropriate time will run the risk of loss of activity privileges and possible disciplinary action. Practices will end up by 4:00 P.M. and games will end approximately at 4:45 P.M. Buses will return to home schools at approximately 5:00 P.M. Student Eligibility: All participating students are required to meet standard eligibility guidelines. 1. All students must have a current Grade Point Average (GPA) of 2.0 or higher and no more than two unsatisfactory conduct/behavior grades. 2. Students not meeting the minimum GPA requirement may be eligible to participate IF THEY ARE ATTENDING AN AFTER SCHOOL ACADEMIC INTERVENTION PROGRAM OR CLASS, MONDAY THROUGH WEDNESDAY. 3. Grade point averages will be monitored quarterly. ALL STUDENTS NON-ACTIVITY LISTS/GUIDELINES WILL OVERRIDE ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS. NO STUDENT WILL BE ALLOWED A PROBATIONARY PERIOD IF ON A NON-ACTIVITY LIST (this is particularly true of SEC transfers.) PROOF OF INSURANCE: All students participating in an after school sports program must have on file an ATHLETIC CLEARENCE CARD showing proof of insurance coverage. Students who do not have health insurance through a family plan may purchase an accident insurance coverage through Myers-Stevens & Co., Inc. The enrollment form is available at each school site. NON-ACTIVITY LIST POLICY Haskell Middle School is committed to high expectations for student academic and behavioral performance and growth. The Non-Activity List exists, not for punitive reasons, but as a means of refocusing, redirecting, and prioritizing student’s energy toward academic achievement and success in the classroom. We believe privileges must be earned. We desire for our students to be accountable and responsible and, in doing so, to realize that a big part of success in any endeavor is the ability to prioritize and organize our time efficiently and effectively. It is our intent that the Non-Activity List assists students in redirecting their priorities while in Middle School and examining their goals for the future. The Non-Activity List Policy consists of the following: 1. The list shall be generated on a quarterly basis based upon the quarterly report card. 2. ACADEMIC GUIDELINES: Students will be placed on the list based upon receiving an “F” grade in achievement when that grade is accompanied by a “U” mark in Work Habits. Students receiving an “F” grade in achievement accompanied by “N”, “S”, or “O” marks in work habits shall not be placed on the list. 3. BEHAVIORAL GUIDELINES: Behavior on the report card is defined and determined by the Citizenship grade. Any combination of three or more “N” or “U” marks in Citizenship will result in placement on the list. Students enrolled in the Haskell Middle School Three -Tiered Student Contact are on the list. 4. FINANCIAL GUIDELINES: This section is not generated by the report card. Students with outstanding financial obligations that have not been met over a period of time will be placed on the list. Inclusive of this are library and textbook obligations, P.E. uniform obligations, and ASB fundraiser obligations. Parents are encouraged to contact the office to make arrangements for payment. Upon clearance of financial obligations, students will be removed from the list. 5. ACTIVITIES: Participation in all activities is affected by the policy. Activities include, but are not limited to sports participation, dances, and nonacademic field trips. A letter will be sent home notifying parents if their student is on the non-activity list. Participation in academic field trips is affected by the Behavioral Guidelines section of the policy only. 6. OPPORTUNITIES FOR SUCCESS: Students may petition for removal of their name from the Non-Activity list. Petitions will be available from the office after the 5th week of each quarter. The petitions are designed to allow the student to demonstrate improvement in the academic and/or behavioral areas from the previous quarterly report card. It is the student’s responsibility to take the petition around to the teachers and turn in the successfully completed petition to the office. If the petition shows the required improvement, the student’s name will be removed from the Non-Activity List. Homeroom Students must be in their Homeroom class and seated by 7:45 A.M. During Homeroom period, attendance is taken, announcements are made and the Channel One Educational News Network is viewed. Then students participate in Sustained Silent Reading. The Channel I news program highlights current news stories from around the country and the world. Break Time A nutrition period is provided for a light snack or refreshment. This break takes place between 2nd and 3rd Periods (except on Assembly Schedule). Students are required to form single lines at the Cafeteria windows. All food should be consumed in the Quad where benches and trash containers are available. Everyone is asked to cooperate by making sure that food wrappers and containers are disposed of properly before leaving the snack area. Lunch and Cafeteria Use Hot lunches are available at the cafeteria, along with other fast-food lunch items. Self-contained lunches (main item, fruit or vegetable, and drink) may be purchased, as well as individual “a-la-carte” items from the cafeteria. Prices vary, but the average cost of lunch ranges between $1.50 to $3.00. All purchases will be made on the prepaid student meal account using their student I.D. number. Students can prepay their account before school, and toward the end of lunch after everyone has been served. The following rules are in effect during the lunch period: Walk, don’t run, and wait in line patiently until your turn for service. Treat ALL lunch workers (adults and students) with kindness and respect. All food and drinks are to be consumed in the Quad area only. No food is permitted outside the Quad area unless there is permission from a teacher. Drinks purchased in the Quad area must be consumed in that area and not taken back to the other areas of the campus. Haskell Middle School students take great pride in maintaining an attractive and litter free campus. Backpacks and Book Bags Backpacks and book bags are used to carry materials to and from school. When in class, store backpacks or book bags carefully so others will not trip over them. Be sure your name is somewhere on your bag. Passing Periods The bell schedule allows students four (4) minutes of passing time between classes, after snack and after lunch to arrive at their next class. It is advised that students be mindful of the time and not “waste” it by socializing with others or attempting to use the vending machines. Homework Policy Students will be allowed to make-up any missed assignments or tests (excused absences). For each day a student is absent, they will be permitted one day of make-up time. Parents may request make-up homework for students ONLY after three (3) full days of absence, or if you have knowledge of an extended absence. Assignments and tests announced prior to the student’s absence may be due the day the student returns. STUDENTS ARE RESPONSIBLE FOR REQUESTING HOMEWORK AND/OR ASSIGNMENTS THAT WERE MISSED. 8TH Grade Promotional Exercise The district policy regarding participation in the middle school promotional exercise program is: 1. Academic Standards – 8th grade students must pass all five (5) required classes (English, Math, Science, Social Studies, and Physical Education) by the end of the 4th quarter, or have an overall G.P.A. of 2.0 or better. Passing is defined as a “D” or better. 2. Financial Obligations – Students must clear all financial obligations prior to participation in the promotional exercises. This may include: lost or damaged textbooks, library books, damaged school property, fund-raising obligations, etc. 3. Citizenship Standards – Students must maintain a satisfactory citizenship record. Students, who receive one or more flagrant referrals or excessive referrals for poor behavior, tardies, etc., may not be permitted to participate in the promotional program. At Haskell Middle School, four (4) or more “U” (Unsatisfactory) grades at the end of the 4th Quarter constitute an Unsatisfactory Citizenship Record. Parents will be notified by letter if their son/daughter is experiencing difficulties in any of the three areas mentionedabove. This will give students and parents sufficient time to correct any deficiencies, as we want all of our students to be eligible to participate in the 8th grade activities and promotional exercises. Parking Lot Safety We are extremely concerned for the safety of our students regarding the school parking lot and crosswalk at Del Amo Blvd. before and after school. Students are required to use the designated Student Walkway when crossing through the parking lot. Students are also required to use the Roseton Ave. Crosswalk to cross Del Amo Blvd. Students are never to be in the parking lot outside the student walkway, unless they are being escorted to their car by a parent. Students on bicycles or skateboards are not allowed in the parking lot at any time. Due to the heavy vehicle traffic flow in the parking lot, before school and at school dismissal, strict adherence to the established traffic flow by parents picking up their students is required. Students are able to enter their car from the designated sidewalk areas, and only to cars in the lane closest to the sidewalk (Sidewalk Car Lane). This applies to parents dropping off or picking up students from the Sidewalk Car Lane in the traffic flow. The left side of the parking lanes furthest from the sidewalk must remain clear for vehicles that need to park or exit the lot. Vehicles may not “cut the line” of waiting cars to get to the front and drop off students. Parents who park in the lot must exit their car, go to the sidewalk area, and escort their student back to the car using the Student Walkway. Students are not allowed to walk through the parking lot to their parent’s car unescorted. We understand that the parking lot is crowded with vehicles and people, all in a hurry, therefore full cooperation, courtesy, and patience is required of everyone to make it as safe as possible. Our student’s safety and well being is of the utmost importance. Haskell Middle School Parent Notification/Permission Slip Thank you for reading and using this publication.
